Driscoll Children’s Genetics Center is a full scale genetic center offering fetal screenings to determine genetic diseases such as Down’s Syndrome or chromosomal disorders, genetic counseling, pediatric genetics (children with birth defects), and cancer genetics. The Genetic Center has a Geneticist and a Perinatologist who will work in conjunction with your obstetrician to determine the health of your unborn baby, as well as offer the very best plan of care if one is needed. Dr. Raymond Lewandowski is a Board Certified Geneticists.

Description of Service:
Comprehensive services including diagnostic evaluation, recommendations for treatment and genetic counseling for infants, children and adolescents with single or multiple birth defects and/or genetic diseases.
Coordination of treatment programs with health professionals in the communities providing primary pediatric care and support services.

What is a genetic counselor?
A genetic counselor is a specially trained healthcare professional with expertise in helping people understand how inherited disease and genetic testing could affect them and their families. All Driscoll Children's Hospital genetic counselors have master’s degrees in genetics.
What do I need to bring with me to my genetic counseling appointment?
The genetic counselor will ask a number of questions about the health of different family members. If your partner is not going to be able to attend the session with you, make sure to ask about the health of family members especially if anyone in the family has been born with some type of problem, including learning and physical difficulties.
What happens in a genetic counseling session?
During the genetic counseling session a genetic counselor will discuss any genetic concerns individuals or families may have for themselves, their children or their pregnancies.
Components of a genetic counseling session most often include:
- Discussion of the reason the patient was referred
- Review of family, medical and pregnancy histories
- Explanation of any risk factors identified
- Discussion of testing options available, including the risks, benefits and limitations of each test
- Aid in decision-making about testing options
- Provision of any additional education or support material
If I am scheduled to see a perinatologist, will they be the one delivering my baby?
The perinatologist is a consulting physician. They will meet with you; discuss concerns related to your pregnancy and make recommendations to your obstetrician. Your obstetrician will still be your primary care provider for the pregnancy.
