Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

When is the best time to consult with an orthodontist for children?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontic specialist for a screening by age 7. If parents, family dentist or physician note a problem, a child may be seen even earlier than 7 years of age. This early screening allows for prevention or more successful correction of growth and developmental problems since a child's bone structure is still growing. Early orthodontic screening and treatment can help those patients with severe crowding that would otherwise need extraction of permanent teeth for correction. A great smile during those forming years of adolescence can lead to greater self-confidence and better socialization.
