Child Passenger Safety

For a free car seat inspection or child passenger safety information, parents can call the Injury Prevention Program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, 694-6700 or toll-free 866-886-KYKS (5957)

The Injury Prevention Program provides training and education to groups and individuals.  We train health professionals, parents, students, emergency services, law enforcement, and any other group or individual who requests education.  Training can be as short as one hour or as long as four days.  We have a team of certified instructors to teach the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Standardized Technical Training to certify individuals in the area of child passenger safety.  Click here to learn more about Child Passenger Safety Certification. Child passenger safety information is also provided to public and private institutions through written materials and videos.

The Injury Prevention Program also sponsors public car seat inspection events. Our certified technicians will check your car seat for free, making sure it is the appropriate seat for your child, and that it is installed properly into the automobile.  We also check individual car seats by appointment at our office. Please call (361) 694-6700 to schedule an appointment.

Another program of Injury Prevention is the Keep Your Kids Safe (KYKS) program, an educational child passenger safety program.  KYKS is a reporting program where concerned citizens report the license plate numbers of vehicles carrying unrestrained children.  For more information about this program, or to find out how to participate, click here.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
  • Infants should be rear-facing until they are at least one year AND 20 lbs., away from air bags, preferably in the back seat.
  • In a rear-facing seat, the harness straps should be in the bottom slots; in a forward-facing seat, they should be in the top slots.
  • Harness straps should be snug; you should only be able to fit one finger between the strap and the baby’s collarbone, with the retainer clip at armpit level.
  • Children over 40 lbs. should use a booster seat with a lap/shoulder belt until their knees can bend over the edge of the seat when they are sitting upright, which is usually around 60 - 80 lbs.
  • Seat belt in car should be in locked mode. Read the sewn-on instructions on the seat belt or see the car’s owner’s manual for instructions.
  • As of September 1, 2001 Texas law mandates that all children 17 and under must be buckled in all seating positions.
