Patient and Parent RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Driscoll Children’s Hospital has a responsibility to provide the best possible medical care in a safe and caring environment. We want you to know what your rights and responsibilities are as a guest of our hospital. We welcome you to talk openly with the staff taking care of your child.
YOU AND YOUR CHILD HAVE THE RIGHT TO...
- be treated with kindness and respect regardless of your race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, handicap, or ability to pay
- sign an advance directive (living will) that can be changed verbally or in writing
- be together as much as possible during your stay
- actively participate in all healthcare decisions
- know the names of the doctors, nurses, and staff members who are providing care
- hear from the doctors in a language you understand, what is wrong with your child, the suggested treatment, and any follow up instructions
- know the risk and reason for any suggested care
- request a consultation or second opinion from another doctor
- refuse to sign a consent form if you feel it has not been explained to you in a way you understand
- change your mind about any procedure for which you have already given your consent
- receive an explanation if something non-routine happens
- participate voluntarily in research projects or educational programs that could affect your child’s care and treatment
- expect a quick response to complaints of pain
- expect confidentiality of all information regarding the care of your child
- change doctors
- change hospitals
- expect privacy
- remove your child from the hospital even when the doctor advises you not to, and be informed of possible risks to this action
- If you have a complaint about your child’s care or treatment, the first people to talk with are those directly involved in your child’s care. For assistance in resolving your complaint, please contact the Patient Relations Department at (361) 694-4035. If we are not successful in addressing your concerns to your satisfaction, you are encouraged contact the Joint Commission’s Office of Quality Monitoring at (800) 994-6610 or visit the website http://www.jointcommission.org/GeneralPublic/Complaint/. If your concern is with a doctor, you may call the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners directly (800)-201-9353 or if your concern is with the hospital, you may contact the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at (888)-973-0022
- examine your bill and receive an explanation of the charges
- receive help and information about financial aide available (Patient Financial Counselor 694-5111)
- review and/or request a copy of your child’s medical record (Health Information Management 694-5468)
YOU AND YOUR CHILD HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO...
- provide correct and complete information about your child’s complaints,
past illnesses, hospitalizations,
medications, and any other matters relating to your child’s health - follow the care plan agreed upon by you and your health care team
- be respectful of the rights of other patients, families, and staff
- assure that the financial obligations associated with your child’s care are fulfilled
- ask questions about anything you do not understand
