KIDS HELPING KIDS! Flour Bluff Key Club sponsored by the Southside
Kiwanis Club hosts … Saturday, November 5, 2005 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Corpus Christi, TX) How could five SUV’s at $20 each help a child go to camp? Sponsored by the Southside Kiwanis Club, the Flour Bluff Key Club, comprised of high school juniors and seniors, are lending a wet, soapy hand during a benefit car wash to help youngsters living with asthma go to camp next summer. On Saturday, November 5th, they will be holding the car wash at Mr. Fancy Pants on the corner of Staples and Lipes Streets from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Funds raised will offset tuition costs for youngsters attending Camp Easy Breathers, a one week summer day camp for children with moderate to severe asthma. The camp is designed to provide physical and social experiences that are fun while increasing a child’s understanding of his or her asthma. Tuition for one child is approximately $100. Asthma affects an estimated 15 million Americans, one-third of who are children. Although there is no cure for the disease, living a healthy, active life with asthma is in fact possible. Asthma is a chronic disorder in which the airways in the lungs become swollen, clogged, and overly sensitive to changes in the environment. During an attack, the muscles that surround the airways tighten, and the inner lining of the airways swells and pushes inward. Asthma kills about 5,000 Americans each year and costs the United States over $10 billion dollars a year in direct and indirect medical expenses. Timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, developing and managing a partnership with a health care professional, as well as reducing exposure to environmental factors all assist in living with asthma. The Southside Kiwanis Club supports and sponsors the Flour Bluff High
School Key Club. They train young students in leadership skills through
community service in an effort to better prepare them to be good citizens
in the future.
