HOSPITAL’S AUXILIARY AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO
ONCOLOGY & CARDIOLOGY PATIENTS, & SENIOR VOLUNTEERS

(Corpus Christi, TX) ) Each year, college-bound students from Driscoll Children Hospital’s are awarded scholarships to help finance their continuing education. Oncology and hematology patients, as well as student volunteers, receive funds from Driscoll Children’s Hospital Auxiliary Board Scholarship Committee. This year, cardiology patients were also eligible with the formation of Driscoll's newest scholarship, the Dr. James A. Duff “Have A Heart” Memorial Scholarship.

One student was awarded the Marcia K. Wilcox Scholarship, a fund for students who currently or have been in the past treated for cancer or other blood disorders, and will be attending college the following fall. Marcia K. Wilcox began working as a hospital volunteer for over twenty-two years until a few days before her death from cancer in March 1990. The hospital’s Auxiliary formed a scholarship fund in her name awarding the first scholarship in July 1992.

2006 – 2007 Marcia K. Wilcox scholarship recipients include:
• Taylor Blaine Yaklin, age 19 – Orange Grove, Texas
Taylor is a graduate of Orange Grove High School. He will be attending Texas A&M University-Kingsville as a freshman and is interested in the field of Agricultural Business.

Two students were awarded Driscoll’s newest scholarship, the Dr. James A. Duff “Have a Heart” Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Duff, a cardio-thoracic surgeon, practiced at the hospital for almost 26 years until his death in October of 1999. Georgia Duff, Dr. Duff’s wife, along with the hospital’s Auxiliary and other donations helped establish this scholarship which will be awarded for the first time this year.

2006 – 2007 Dr. James A. Duff “Have a Heart” Memorial Scholarship recipients include:
• Dua Abudiab, age 19 – Corpus Christi, TX
Dua is a 2005 graduate of Richard King High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. She
is currently enrolled at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
• Chase Lindeman, age 23 – Odem, TX
Chase is a graduate of Odem High School. He is a Management Information System
major at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Once he completes his
undergraduate degree, he has plans to earn a Masters in Business Administration.

Six students received the Clara Driscoll Spirit Scholarship. This scholarship was established for senior Volunteens, the hospital’s teenage volunteers, who have a minimum B average or G.P.A. of 3.0 and have completed at least 300 hours of volunteer service at the hospital.

2006 – 2007 Clara Driscoll Scholarship recipients include:
• Bailey McAllister, age 20 – Corpus Christi, TX
Bailey is a nursing major who will attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the fall.
• Ludi Montemayor , age 22 – Corpus Christi, TX
Ludi is interested in studying psychology and will attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the fall.
• Evelyn Diane Mueller, age 18 – Portland, TX
Evelyn will major in nursing at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this fall.
• Roland Perez, age 21 – Benavides, TX
Roland is a Biology/Pre-Med student who will be attending the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston beginning in the fall.
• Janelle Rechy, age 18 – Corpus Christi, TX
Janelle is interested in being a Medical Office Specialist and will attend either Southern Careers Institute or Del Mar College.
• Catherine Trevino, age 18 – Corpus Christi, TX
Catherine is a Pre-Med/Biology major who will begin her schooling at Del Mar College.

Potential scholarships recipients fill out applications, which outline G.P.A., extra-curricular activities, and future goals. Scholarships are based on G.P.A. and need, as well as other scholarships each student is receiving. Donations throughout the year, a percentage of the hospital Christmas card sales, and other special projects of the Auxiliary fund the scholarships.
