(Corpus Christi, TX) Kids helping kids! Sick children with colds and minor illnesses waiting to see doctors and nurses, as well as their siblings, will soon have new reading material to keep them occupied while they wait. More specifically, 34 hard-bound books written and published by pre-AP language arts sixth graders from Kaffie Middle School will be added to Driscoll Children’s Urgent Care waiting room’s ever-growing library. The budding authors will donate their literary creations on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. at the facility.

The purpose of the hard-bound book project was for students to experience the writing process from brainstorming story ideas, editing, and choosing audience, all the way to illustrating and sending to a publishing company. Students purchased copies of their book for themselves and had a choice to order one to donate to Driscoll.

“I wanted the students to develop a desire to think outside of themselves and to contribute something to their community,” says Connie Kirkpatrick, language arts teacher. “I am very proud of them for their creativity and generosity.”
