(Corpus Christi, TX) Every Fall, former Driscoll Children’s
Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit patients, otherwise known as “N.I.C.U.
graduates,” converge on hospital grounds to meet up with their
doctors, nurses, and hospital staff and celebrate life! The day is devoted
to all the children and families who were given a “fighting chance”
with the help of Driscoll’s N.I.C.U. staff and to reflect on how
important their work is.
During the Halloween-themed party, doctors, nurses, and staff who cared
for Driscoll patients over the years will be on-hand to converse and
share stories of what these wonderful patients have been doing since
their stay at Driscoll … some possibly many years ago. Most important
to the kids though - it’s a day for having fun! In addition to
donning costumes, festivities will include a moon jump, petting zoo,
face painting, games, as well as cupcakes and snow cones!
During the past 54 years, Driscoll’s N.I.C.U. has cared for more
than 20,000 premature and critically ill babies, offering state-of-the-art
services and programs not available any where else in South Texas. Today,
the Level III unit has successfully cared for premature infants (carried
less than 37 weeks) as young as 23 weeks gestation, and weighing as
little as 400grams. The unit also cares for newborns for a variety of
other reasons including respiratory distress, infections, birth defects,
and other illnesses. Licensed for 51 beds, Driscoll’s N.I.C.U.
is the only hospital in South Texas staffed by neonatologists in the
hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, not on-call. Additionally, support
staff of nurses, dietitians, surgeons, anesthesiologists are all specially
trained to care exclusively for the tiniest of babies are all a part
of the N.I.C.U. team.
Since opening its doors in 1953, Driscoll Children’s Hospital
has been offering hope and healing to the children of South Texas for
half a century. The facility is a 189-bed pediatric tertiary care center
with pediatric board-certified specialists representing 19 medical and
nine surgical specialties. Each year, more than 6,000 children are admitted
for inpatient care, 5,000 for day surgery, and 50,000 for outpatient
primary and specialty care, as well as 40,000 for emergency care, as
the first South Texas hospital with emergency services exclusively for
children. Additionally, Driscoll maintains a state-of-the-art ground/air
transport team, 20-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 40-bed neonatal
intensive care unit, and specialized medical outreach.
