(Corpus Christi, TX) There is an immediate need for more child passenger safety technicians in South Texas; child safety seat checkups routinely discover that nine out of 10 children are not properly restrained in appropriate car seats. Driscoll Children’s Hospital will host a three-day child passenger safety technician training course, and those who attend will receive a two-year national certification with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a Child Passenger Safety Technician.

“These are intense days of instruction and practice to prepare new technicians to install a variety of car seats into a variety of cars. Students have three days of intense study with hours of homework each evening,” says Karen Beard, Injury Prevention Coordinator for Driscoll Children’s Hospital. “At the conclusion of the class, participants will practice what they have learned at a public car seat inspection.”

Through a partnership with the Kohl’s Department Stores, Driscoll Children’s Hospital and its Injury Prevention Department will hold a free car seat check at Kohl’s Department Store on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Kohl’s has supported Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s Injury Prevention program since 2003. Their commitment through the “Kohl’s Cares for Kids” program raises funds for children’s health and educational opportunities through the sale of special gift items. Net profits from the sales support children’s health and educational opportunities in the market areas served by the department store.
