TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS CELEBRATE NEW LIVES After a successful first year, Driscoll Children’s Hospital Kidney Center invites all (Corpus Christi, TX) Since performing the first kidney transplant in South Texas one year ago, Driscoll Children’s Hospital has performed 17 transplants. Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s Kidney Center will host the first annual Transplant Reunion on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Whataburger Field at 5:30 p.m. for those patients who have undergone a kidney transplant at Driscoll. In addition, April is Donate Life Month, and Southwest Transplant Alliance will be on hand distributing information and signing people up to become organ donors. There is a critical shortage of organs, tissues and eyes available for donation. Over 96,000 patients in the United States await transplantation, and more than 7,000 of them are Texans. Luckily for 2 brothers, their time on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) waitlist wasn’t too long. Joshua Munoz, 14, waited only 2 months before receiving his new kidney, and Arturo Munoz III, 17, received his kidney from his father, Arturo Munoz, Jr. The Munoz family will be in attendance to share their experience. The Transplant Reunion will be held at Kieschnick’s Corner and the Kid Zone where patients will have the opportunity to run around and be a kid. “Our patients got to know each other pretty well while in dialysis for three to four hours. This reunion will allow them to see each other again, but this time healthy and strong,” says Annette Rangel, transplant coordinator for Driscoll Children’s Hospital. The patients will participate in Baseball Buddies before the game, as well as in some in-game promotions.
