(Corpus Christi, TX) Statistics show that one in four children in Nueces County is overweight over the 90th percentile weight for length, and at risk for other health related issues including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. In an effort to change this startling trend, Driscoll Children’s Hospital along with its Food and Nutrition Department and Diabetes and Endocrine Program created, Weigh of Life - KIDS!, a 3-week program for parents of children ages 4 to 8 designed to educate about healthy nutrition and lifestyles which they can then in turn take home and implement.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Good nutrition
  • Appropriate portion sizes
  • Meal and snack ideas
  • Behavioral Changes
  • Proper fitness

“This program will focus on the parent,” says Dr. Stephen Ponder, pediatric endocrinologist and Director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Center of South Texas at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. “We had to do this because of the sheer overwhelming number of patients with type 2 diabetes. The younger we start, then we stand the chance of preventing a lot of problems in the future.”

Open to anyone, cost of the 3-week course is $15.
