DRISCOLL CHILDREN’S KIDNEY CENTER
GRAND OPENING
Wednesday, September 22, 2004
10 a.m.
2nd floor Joseph M. Sloan Building

(Corpus Christi, TX) ) Driscoll Children's Hospital is excited to announce a first in South Texas with the grand opening of the Driscoll Children’s Kidney Center. This center will offer dialysis services for children who would other wise seek treatment at an adult center or in San Antonio or Houston.

For children who suffer from kidney failure, treatment is often difficult and presents problems unique to the age of the patient. The first comes in form of a new dialysis center equipped with 6 Hemodialysis machines and a staff specially trained to take care of the needs of children and their families. Before, children would have to go to San Antonio or Houston or in rare cases sit alongside adults seeking the same treatment in an adult facility.

Both Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis are available in the new Driscoll Children's Kidney Center. Peritoneal dialysis can be done in the comfort of a patient’s home, and the Driscoll Children’s Kidney Center has a room specially designed for patients to learn how to use Peritoneal Dialysis.

The National Kidney Foundation of the Texas Coastal Bend and Dr. Bill Allen, Pediatric Nephrologist of Driscoll Children's Hospital have been the visionaries for this first in South Texas. Pediatric nephrologists, Dr. Bill Allen and Dr. Robert Gillespie work hand in hand with pediatric dialysis nurses, dietitians and social workers to oversee the care of South Texas children with kidney disease. As Driscoll Children's Hospital has expanded to provide increased services across the Rio Grande Valley the patient load in the Children’s Kidney Center has increased and more pediatric aid is necessary from the National Kidney Foundation of the Texas Coastal Bend. The new Driscoll Children's Kidney Center gives children the opportunity to seek treatment close to home in a child friendly environment with specially trained pediatric personnel. In keeping with the hospital’s mission to “be here for the kids”, Driscoll Children's Hospital is also in the process of adding a pediatric kidney transplant surgeon to the staff. This “first” will offer parents and children the opportunity to continue to seek healing at home.
