DRISCOLL “VOLUNTEENS” RECEIVE AWARDS AT HEALTH CARE CONFERENCE

Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries Junior Volunteer Conference • August 25th

(Corpus Christi, TX)  Teenaged volunteers at Driscoll Children's Hospital, known as volunteens, received some well-deserved praise July 20-22 when they attended the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries (TAHA) Junior Volunteer Conference.  Receiving first place in the poster and 3-D exhibit competitions, and second place in the scrapbook competition, the volunteens were given an opportunity to learn about volunteer services and activities at other hospitals.

The conference included a tour of various health facilities, allowing the participants to glimpse the different career opportunities available in the health care industry.  Recreational activities, such as teambuilding and a dance party, were also included in the conference.  Despite their busy schedule, the volunteens put in extra effort and collected empty aluminum cans throughout the conference, with recycling profits to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Recently, a 7 year-old patient decided to volunteer as a result of the example he saw during his time at Driscoll; proof that patients have begun to recognize the volunteens’ hard work ethics and caring attitudes as well.
