Duration: Minimum – 2 weeks; Maximum – 4 weeks

Rotation Hours: Hours contingent upon physician’s schedule
Prerequisite(s): 4th Year Status

Goals-The faculty will strive to:

• Provide an environment conducive to learning
• Offer a logical approach to the most common pediatric infectious disease problems.
• Provide guidance for the student to find appropriate literature pertaining to the patients followed by the service.

Objectives-At the end of the rotation, the student will be able to:

• Differentiate infectious vs. non-infectious cases of fever
• Appropriately select antibiotics in children.
• Recognize the problem of emerging antibiotic resistance.
• Obtain all the information necessary to evaluate a febrile child.
• Efficiently utilize the microbiology and virology laboratories.

Learning Activities:

• Morning Report – Monday through Friday; 7am – 8am
• Noon Lecture – Monday through Thursday; 12pm – 1pm
• Grand Rounds– Fridays; 12:30
• Daily Rounds with Infectious Disease Specialist
• Infectious Disease Clinic – 2x/week

• Texas A&M University Corpus Christi Library
• Infectious Disease Files
• Microbiology and Virology Laboratories

Evaluation:

• Clinical evaluation form (100%) to be completed by the physician preceptor with whom the student has worked.
