Goals-The faculty will strive to:

Develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge that constitute a good foundation in outpatient pediatrics.
Teach competence in the clinical evaluation of infants, children and adolescents with a wide range of outpatient problems.
Correlate basic science knowledge with normal growth, development and clinical diseases in children and adolescents.
Enhance the student’s communication skills with patients, parents and professional colleagues.
Expose the student to the multiple presentations of common pediatric disorders and to the clinical features of less common problems in children and adolescents.
Contrast science-based pediatrics with common sense and the required art of medical practice.

Objectives-At the end of the rotation, the student will be able to:

Obtain a well-organized/focused medical history from a second party or adolescent and perform a complete physical examination.
Present findings in focused/cohesive manner and suggest a sort differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
Understand the longitudinal use of growth graphs, basic growth and development, Tanner stages and puberty.
Perform tympanometry, write prescriptions, use a rotational approach to the Tier I and II antibiotics.
Understand EPSDT screening, NB screening, lead evaluation, and hearing/vision screens.
Recognize common pediatric problems in the outpatient setting.

Learning Activities:

Diagnostic algorithm modules of common pediatric complaints, for example, “the red eye”, “the painful limp”, and “stridor”, etc.
Observe and perform tympanometry, acoustic reflexometry, pneumatic otoscopy, ear washes.
Outpatient bacteriology experience and learning module on rational antibiotic usage.
Outlining brief impressions, differential diagnoses, laboratory testing and treatment plans; provision of appropriate prescriptions with staff supervision.

Textbooks, collection of journal references
Clinic staff, physicians and nurses, available to work with the student
Medical Library located on hospital campus and at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi

Evaluation:

Direct observation and feedback during rotation
Standard student clinical evaluation form upon completion of rotation
Clinical Evaluation Form (100%) to be completed by the physician preceptor with whom the student has worked.
