Learn more about volunteer opportunities
Whether playing with a child, helping visitors find a gift, entering data or filing records, all volunteer work contributes to the welfare of our patients and their families. Together, we strive to make each family feel comfortable and at home during their stay at Driscoll Children's Hospital.
Carousel Gift
Shop and Carousel Connection: A shoppers' paradise! These two shops offer giftware, jewelry, stuffed animals, toys, balloons, magazines, Driscoll Children's Hospital logo gear, cards made by Chemo Kids, candy, snacks…plus freshly baked cookies and cappuccino! Like to meet folks and help them find just the right gift? This is for you!
Child Life:
Are you a kid at heart? Enjoy playing games, painting or creating a craft project? We have well equipped playrooms dedicated to making a child’s stay as comfortable and carefree as possible. Additional training, volunteers work with children and Child Life Specialists. The presence of a Volunteer can be very reassuring to a child.
Cottage Shop: Bargain hunters beware…you may not be able to leave this place. The Cottage Resale Shop accepts gently used donations of clothing, household goods, toys, books and sells them at rock-bottom prices. All proceeds benefit the patients of Driscoll Children's Hospital.
Half Pint Library: Volunteers who believe in the healing power of reading will enjoy this area. Take mobile book carts to patient rooms and read a story if desired. These volunteers also sort donated books by reading level and re-stock book carts in waiting areas and the Main Lobby.
Information Desk: Do you know how to make people feel at home quickly? This job's for you. Volunteers greet guests, issue visitor passes, and give directions. This hub of activity requires a warm greeting as the first step in creating a welcoming first impression. Good communication and problem solving skills will help Volunteers assist the many visitors coming to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
Office Assistants: Many departments, including Health Information Management, Human Resources and the Ortho Rehab Clinic, need volunteers who enjoy clerical work, data entry, and receptionist duties. These are great positions for those with an eye to detail and good organization skills. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Oncology:Special volunteers share their time and love with children battling cancer. Reading, playing games, helping with special events and doing crafts help take children's minds off their illness. Volunteers get to know families and work closely with staff on event planning. Volunteers in this area must be Child Life trained.
Room Service: Makes our young patients and their guests feel like VIPs! Deliver movies, magazines, and meals to patients and parents to patient rooms.
Surgical Waiting: Are you able to comfort those who are anxious? This may be the spot for you. Volunteers serve as a liaison between patient families and surgical staff. They offer coffee, reading materials or activities to family members in the surgical waiting area.
Toy Distribution: These volunteers are sure to see a smile! Select and deliver a gift for each patient and those children having a birthday while here at Driscoll Children's Hospital.
Adult volunteer opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley specialty clinics in McAllen and Brownsville are also available Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Please contact the Volunteer Services Department at 361-694-5011 or 1-800-DCH-LOVE.
