Legislators deal with hundreds of issues and rely on their constituents to let them know which issues are important to them. The following are helpful tips to remember when contacting your legislators about potential legislation:
Tips for Letters, Faxes, and Emails
- Write to legislators that represent your district
- Be concise
- Clearly state your purpose and requested action
- Give example of how the potential legislation affects your community
- Identify bills by name and number, i.e. House Bill: H.R.____ or Senate Bill: S.____
- Thank for previous support or action
- Sign your letter with your name and home address

Tips for Making Phone Calls
- If you are unable to speak directly to the legislator, ask to speak with the aide who handles the issue of concern
- Identify yourself by name and home address
- Prepare talking points for the call
- Focus on a single issue
- Identify the local impact of the issue and clearly state requested action
- Limit call to under 5 minutes
- If necessary, leave a brief message, making sure to identify yourself and the issue
