Driscoll celebrates 10th anniversary of its first kidney transplant

Driscoll Children’s Hospital celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first kidney transplant performed at the hospital on Feb. 11 by inviting former transplant recipients and their families to a fun-filled night at the Texas State Aquarium.

Driscoll’s first kidney transplant was performed at Driscoll Children’s Hospital by Stephen Almond, MD, on Feb. 14, 2007. It was the first transplant of any kind, at any hospital in South Texas. Before Driscoll Children’s Hospital was approved to have its Renal Transplant Program, a child needing a transplant was sent to San Antonio, Houston or Galveston.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital has completed 98 kidney transplants over the past 10 years.
