Driscoll Foundation and Driscoll Children’s Hospital Board Announce New Appointees and Officers to Boards

CORPUS CHRISTI —The governing bodies of Driscoll Children’s Hospital have announced new members and officers to its boards.

The Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll, Jr., Foundation Board (the Driscoll Foundation) has appointed Mike Carrell and Paul Daniel Chapa to serve as Trustees. They will join Robert Furgason (Vice-Chair), Tom Dobson (Chairman), Judge Loyd Neal and Sam L. Susser on the Foundation Board.

And, the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Governing Board (DCH) has received and accepted a slate of appointees and officers from the Driscoll Foundation. Sam L. Susser (Chair), Paul Daniel Chapa (Vice-Chair) Judge Loyd Neal (Past-Chair) Mike Carrell, Jim Devlin, Lenora Keas, and Steve Woerner, President and CEO of Driscoll Health System, will serve as members of the Executive Committee.

Leon Smith-Harrison, MD, Mary Clark and Alex Kirkland were named as new Directors of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Additional Directors at Driscoll Children’s Hospital who were reappointed include: Stephen Almond, MD, Murray Bass, Jr., Julie Buckley, Reba Cardenas-McNair and Estela O’Daniell, MD.

To recap,  the Directors of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital are:  Sam L. Susser, Chair; Paul Daniel Chapa, Vice-Chair;  Stephen Almond, MD, Murray Bass, Jr., Julie Buckley, Mike Carrell, Mary Clark, Jim Devlin, Leon Smith-Harrison, MD, Lenora Keas, Alex Kirkland, Reba Cardenas McNair, Judge Loyd Neal, Past-Chair, Estela O’Daniell, MD, and Steve Woerner, President and CEO.

Mr. Susser assumes the role as Chairman of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Governing Board following Nueces County Judge Loyd Neal, who completed his term as board chair after serving five years in this leadership capacity. Judge Neal has been a champion of Driscoll Children’s Hospital for many years, ensuring the vision of founder Clara Driscoll is carried out. He was appointed to the Driscoll Foundation Board as a Trustee in 2005 and as a member of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Governing Board the same year. He will remain a Trustee of the Driscoll Foundation Board and serve as Past-Chair on the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Board. During his tenure as board chair, Judge Neal was instrumental in the hospital’s growth and to ensuring Driscoll Children’s Hospital remains the leader in children’s healthcare in South Texas.

“It has been and continues to be an honor to help extend the mission of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. By serving the children of South Texas I know our founder, Clara Driscoll, would be proud of her legacy,” said Judge Neal. “I look forward to continuing to assist and support Driscoll in the amazing growth it is embarking on.”

During Judge Neal’s time as board chair, Mr. Susser worked closely with him as vice-chair.

“I have the utmost respect and admiration for all that Loyd Neal has accomplished in his years as board chair,” said Mr. Susser. “The transition in our board’s leadership has gone smoothly thanks to Loyd’s spirit of teamwork and encouragement to learn as much as possible about the hospital in past years. I am eager to move forward with the amazing work we have in progress and to ensure only the best medical care possible for the children of South Texas.”

Biographical highlights for new Officers and Directors appear below:

Mike Carrell is Regional President of Frost Bank. Mr. Carrell earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural engineering at Texas A&M University and an MBA from Corpus Christi State University. An active member of the community, Mr. Carrell serves as a board member on several boards including the Coastal Bend Community Foundation where he is incoming Chairman, the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay, and the United Way of the Coastal Bend. Mr. Carrell is a former chairman of the Port of Corpus Christi. Mr. Carrell and his wife, Betsy, are the parents of two sons.

Paul Daniel Chapa is a Partner with Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP. Mr. Chapa is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s in finance, and he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Houston Law Center. Mr. Chapa is actively involved in numerous civic and charitable organizations in the Coastal Bend. His leadership roles include serving on the boards of the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay, the Buccaneer Commission and as an alumna of the Texas Lyceum.  Mr. Chapa and his wife, Vicky, are the parents of four children.

Mary D. Clark is a former commercial loan officer specializing in oil and gas in Midland and Corpus Christi as an Assistant Vice President for Texas Commerce Bank. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance. Mrs. Clark’s civic work includes serving as co-chair of the “Growing in Grace” Capital Campaign to build a middle school at St. James Episcopal School, a past president of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Development Foundation and currently, a past president of the Charity League, past president of the Order of de Pineda and as an advisory board member for American Bank.  Mrs. Clark and her husband, Jimmy, are the parents of two sons.

Leon Smith-Harrison, MD, is a Board-Certified Urologist specializing in Pediatric Urology at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Dr. Smith-Harrison is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with a B.S., and he received his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. He is a graduate of The E. Claiborne Robins School of Business with an M.B.A. Dr. Smith-Harrison served in the United States Air Force and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He has served numerous academic appointments and clinical practice throughout his career.

Alex Kirkland is a captain with Delta Airlines and also had a distinguished 27-plus-year career with the United States Navy. Mr. Kirkland earned a master’s in Global Business Leadership from the University of San Diego School of Business. An active member of the community, Mr. Kirkland has served as a board member on several boards including the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Development Foundation, where he will become the Chairman in May 2017. Mr. Kirkland and his wife, Carol, are the parents of two daughters.

Sam L. Susser is President of Susser Holdings II, L.P. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance. Mr. Susser was appointed as a Trustee of the Driscoll Foundation in 2000 and serves as a director of the National Retail Properties, Inc., is a member of the Advisory Board of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas, is co-chair of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for the Study for Energy, Law and Business, is an Advisory Trustee of the Texas State Aquarium and is co-chair of Governmental Relations at the MD Anderson Board of Visitors. Mr. Susser and his wife, Catherine, are the parents of a daughter and two sons.

About the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll, Jr., Foundation …

Upon the death of Clara Driscoll in 1945, her will made plans for the creation of The Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll, Jr., Foundation, in memory of her parents and brother. The Foundation was formed to create and maintain a hospital for children thereby helping to improve the health of children throughout South Texas and to oversee assets to ensure the hospital would be financially sound.
