Rehabilitation Services at Driscoll Children’s Hospital offered its Rehabilitation patients who might not have the opportunity to stand in line at the mall to see Santa a chance to have their photo taken with him Tuesday.

This is the first year for the photo event, which was suggested by staff member Rachel Garcia after hearing parents say their children weren’t able to participate in the traditional photo with Santa.

“I wanted these kids to have the opportunity to experience taking pictures with Santa during the holiday,” said Garcia, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant at Driscoll.

Patients were encouraged to sign up for a specific appointment the week before Christmas. Santa and his elves were Driscoll therapists known to the patients and trained to assist them with their special needs.

“We were able to create an environment and provide the special help needed to allow our kids to get that photo with Santa. They may not be able to handle the long lines at the mall or tolerate all the activity. Our staff knows what to do to help them succeed,”said Susan T. Fields, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Each Driscoll Rehabilitation family left with a photo printed in a holiday frame, and each Rehabilitation patient was able to select a toy from the Rehabilitation Services’ HEB Kids Market, which was turned into Santa’s workshop. The toys were donated by the Rob Hall family and HEB.
