A generous gift of a jet from Corpus Christi physician Charles Campbell, MD, and his wife Mary Campbell to Driscoll Children’s Hospital will be applied toward the futuresbright campaign, which will help fund Driscoll’s largest expansion and renovation in recent history.
“It was very easy to decide to give this to the children of South Texas, through Driscoll Children’s Hospital,” said Opthamologist Charles Campbell, MD, of South Texas Retina Consultants.
“We are grateful for such a significant gift,” said Alex Kirkland, President of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Development Board and a member of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Governing Board of Directors, who accepted the jet on the behalf of Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
The Westwind II aircraft will be sold and the proceeds used to help meet the challenge grant of $1 million issued by the Mabee Foundation toward the hospital’s $80-million expansion. South Texas residents have given $11.5 million toward the goal of $16 million.
“Dr. Campbell’s gift is the largest gift ever made from a member of Driscoll’s medical staff. His commitment assists greatly in what we are able to accomplish and will help us meet the Mabee Challenge and successfully complete our capital campaign. It is an exciting time of growth and change for us with the construction of our new North Pavilion,” said Steve Woerner, President and CEO of Driscoll Health System.
“Driscoll is honored by the Campbells’ generosity. There is no doubt their legacy of service has provided hope and healing to thousands of children at Driscoll Children’s Hospital,” said Martha Avery, Vice President of Development for Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Campbell has served on the medical staff of Driscoll Children’s Hospital for decades. Dr. Campbell and his associates have provided critical care for premature babies in Driscoll’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, principally in the diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity, which is one of the most common causes of visual loss in childhood. Mary Campbell has been a member of Clowns Who Care for almost 20 years.
