Kevin S. Hopkins, MD, FACS, FAAP, Craniomaxillofacial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was chosen as the Caller-Times Health Care Hero in the Physician’s Excellence in Health Care Award category.
“I am very humbled in being chosen for this award by the Caller-Times and this esteemed panel of judges. It gives me the opportunity to reflect on, and be grateful for the heroes in my life who have influenced me and allowed me to grow and flourish in my chosen field that I am so passionate about,” said Dr. Hopkins.
“I share this honor with my mother, who led by example in raising 5 children by herself and always encouraged us to follow our dreams; my supportive brothers and sisters; my wife, Seema, whose compassion and passion to give a voice to the disenfranchised and underserved around the world is a constant inspiration; and to my colleagues and staff at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, where we have an amazing supportive environment that allows us to excel and focus on providing the best care for our patients, as evidenced by our recent successful conjoined twins separation surgery.
“Most importantly, I would like to honor the most significant heroes – our patients – who, in spite of their young age impact our lives immensely and teach us every day about dignity and strength in the way that they and their families live their lives when faced with seemingly insurmountable problems.”
In practice for 22 years, Dr. Hopkins has been at Driscoll Children’s Hospital for 14 years. Dr. Hopkins often uses his vacation time traveling to Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to perform surgeries and to train physicians on how to best treat their underserved population.
Each year, the newspaper honors health care professionals who make a difference in the lives of Coastal Bend families every day. Three finalists were nominated in six different categories. Nominations are submitted by patients, co-workers, employees, family members or friends.
