Scholarships

The Auxiliary to Driscoll Children’s Hospital is so proud to be able to offer scholarships to our patients and teen volunteers.

Marcia K. Wilcox Scholarship

In 1992 the Auxiliary to Driscoll Children’s Hospital formed the Marcia K. Wilcox Memorial Scholarship. As a volunteer, Marcia served the patients, their families and the staff with dedication for almost 23 years until her death in March of 1990. Scholarships are awarded annually to former and/or current oncology patients of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Donations, along with the proceeds from the holiday cards, help to fund the scholarship.

Dr. James A. Duff Scholarship

In the spring of 2006, the Auxiliary to Driscoll Children’s Hospital established the Dr. James A. Duff “Have a Heart” Memorial Scholarship for cardiac patients. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Duff served the patients, their families and the staff with dedication for almost 26 years. He was instrumental in creating the cardiology program at Driscoll in the late 1960s, and the scholarship was created to honor his memory. Scholarships are awarded annually to former and/or current cardiac patients of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Donations, along with the proceeds from the annual Book and Uniform Sale, help to fund the scholarship.

Clara Spirit Scholarship

The Auxiliary to Driscoll Children’s Hospital established the Clara Driscoll Spirit Scholarship for teen volunteers. It is a one-time scholarship of $1,500. Qualified Volunteens and/or student volunteers already attending a college or university may apply. If no applicants qualify, then the scholarship will carry over to the following year. This scholarship will only apply toward tuition, books and mandatory fees. Donations, along with the proceeds from the summer snack cart (Jolly Trolley) help to fund the scholarship.

Guidelines for scholarship recipients

1. Following the scholarship reception, give the scholarship chairperson your full name, name of the college/university, school’s address, office where money should be sent and your student ID number. The ID number should be included on all scholarship checks. You can email Volunteer Services at volunteer@dchstx.org to get the scholarship chairperson’s email address. The issuing of scholarships, when first awarded, begins in the fall of the year that they are received.

2. Scholarship checks are written near the end of July and sent to the recipients’ schools. Make sure you check with your university/college to verify that the check was received prior to beginning each semester.

4. Recipients of the Marcia K. Wilcox Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. James A. Duff “Have a Heart” Memorial Scholarship must send a copy of their transcript and a cover letter sharing details of each semester to the scholarship committee at the end of each semester. It is suggested that you do this as soon as you have your grades. Offices are closed for a time during the holidays, and waiting to send your information could delay the committee from receiving it in a timely manner.

*To guarantee receipt of scholarship funds, transcripts must be received two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.
