Driscoll Children's Hospital's Adolescent Weight Management Program is a new, comprehensive nutrition and weight management clinic that can provide you and your family an opportunity to learn how to live a healthier life.

Obesity is a disease that has increased tremendously throughout South Texas and the United States. Approximately one-third of children and teens are obese.

The clinic offers a multidisciplinary approach in dealing with adolescent obesity. You will be seen by experts in childhood nutrition and weight loss.

Our team consists of:


  • endocrinologists
  • surgeons
  • nutritionists
  • psychologists
  • physical therapists

What is the Weight Management Program's Role?


  • nutritionists will help guide you to a healthier lifestyle by teaching you and your family about healthy eating, both in quality and quantity of foods
  • physical therapists will recommend exercises and physical activity that will help in your weight loss
  • psychologists will provide some of the support you will need in dealing with the emotional challenges of obesity
  • endocrinologists' key role will be in controlling metabolic problems that cause or contribute to obesity
  • surgeons will offer surgery as another tool to aid in weight loss to patients who qualify
  • many other services are also available to help with different aspects of this complex issue\

WEIGH TO GO!


Weigh To Go! Is a food and fitness program designed to help overweight kids and their families learn about healthy eating and encourage an active lifestyle. The program provides fun and interactive classes which focus on healthy eating habits, including cooking classes, and fun fitness activities designed to increase everyday activity and exercise. This six week program targets children ages 9-14.

Topics to be covered include:
  • Using the Food Guide Pyramid
  • Energy Balance
  • Exercise and Fitness
  • Healthy Meals and Snacks
  • Cooking Demonstrations
  • Label Reading
  • Meal Planning/Restaurant Choices

Objective
  • The Weigh To Go Program is designed to educate above - average weight children and their families about nutrition & healty lifestyles.
  • Acquire an understanding of, and an increased sensitivity to hunger, appetite and fullness.
  • Develop good eating habits.
  • Understand the relationship between fitness and the body.
  • Improve fitness levels.
  • Increase self-esteem and develop a more positive body image.

Each session will include:
  • 40 Minutes Nutrition Lesson
  • 40 Minutes Cooking
  • 30 Minutes Exercise
Kids will also be given a food and exercise diary as well as other activities to work on at home.

$25 for six week program Includes:
  • Six Group Classes
  • Parent Participation Encouraged

Weigh of Life Kids! Is a nutrition and fitness program designed to help kids and their families learn about healthy eating and encourage an active lifestyle. The program provides fun and interactive classes which focus on healthy eating habits, including cooking/menu ideas, and fun fitness activities designed to increase everyday activity and exercise. This three week program targets parents with children ages 4-8.

Topics to be covered include:
  • Using the Food Guide Pyramid
  • Energy Balance
  • Healthy Meals and Snacks
  • Cooking Suggestions
  • Portion Size
  • Meal Planning/Restaurant Choices

Objective
  • The Weigh of Life Kids Program is designed to educate children and their families about nutrition & healthy lifestyles.
  • Acquire an understanding of the food guide pyramid, including appropriate portion sizes.
  • Develop good eating habits.
  • Understand the relationship between fitness and the body.
  • Improve fitness levels.

Thursday 4:30 - 6:00p.m.
(1st, 2nd, and 3rd Thursdays Monthly)

$15 for three week program
