Pediatric Inpatient (q4 call)

Goals-The faculty will strive to:

• Develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge that constitute a good foundation in inpatient pediatrics
• Involve student actively in patient care and stress the assessment and management of common inpatient childhood conditions
• Demonstrate the continuum of care from outpatient-inpatient-outpatient
• Clarify which patients require in-hospital care and why
• Emphasize the important role of social factors in child's care
• Assist the student in leaning the indications, limitations, and interpretation of laboratory tests and imaging studies
• Facilitate the development of a logical and appropriate clinical approach to the care of hospitalized children
• Help the student understand how to maintain accurate, timely and legally appropriate medical records;
• Interact with members of the medial staff and patient's families as a role model
• Demonstrate the appropriate utilization of consultations
• Enhance the student's ability to research the literature and use reference books and manuals in the day to day care of patients

Objectives-At the end of the rotation, the student will be able to:

• Discuss indications for hospitalizations
• Perform a thorough and age appropriate history and physical examination
• Record the obtained information in a legible, complete and well organized fashion
• Formulate a differential diagnosis with age appropriate consideration
• Explain the indications and limitations of laboratory testing and interpret abnormalities in the context of specific physiologic derangements
• Apply principles of decision-making and problem-solving in the care of hospitalized children
• Identify problems and risk factors in the child and the family
• Communicate well with residents, attending staff, nurses
• Recognize the limit of one's knowledge and ask for help as needed
• Maintain daily progress notes, relevant investigations and management plans.

Learning Activities:

• Morning Report 7:00-8:00 a.m. Includes night's prior admissions including emergency department admissions;
• Morning floor rounds with senior resident supervision taking place daily from 8:00-11:00 a.m.
• Teaching floor rounds targeted to the knowledge and skills required of a general pediatrician is conducted by the faculty daily from 11:00-12:00 p.m. or from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
• Core conference: Monday-Thursdays which include diverse topics fundamental to general pediatrics (12:00-1:00 PM);
• Pediatric Grand Rounds are presented each Friday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
• Bedside rounds held by the faculty from 2:00-3:30 p.m. with students include all patient from whom students are responsible
• Sign-out rounds at 4:00 p.m. are used to discuss patients who are admitted to the hospital during the day and patients in need of close observation.

• Textbooks, collection of journal references
• Clinic staff, physicians and nurses, available to work with the student.
• Medical Library on hospital campus and library at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi

Evaluation:

• Direct observation and feedback during rotation
• Standard student clinical evaluation form upon completion of rotation
• Clinical Evaluation Form (100%) to be completed by the physician preceptor with whom the student has worked.
