Following birth, Valerie and her family rushed to Driscoll Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after being diagnosed with renal failure and Vater Syndrome. She required personal and immediate attention from her physicians, pediatric nephrologists Dr. William Allen, Dr. Samhar Al-Akash, and pediatric surgeon Dr. Stephen Almond. With the overwhelming news of their daughter, Valerie’s parents quickly became calm as they noticed the DCH pediatric staff working with many small babies in the unit where each received exclusive and professional care. Currently, Valerie continues to receive close attention from her physicians and DCH staff once a week. She enjoys watching Bambi cartoons and playing with her cousin in her little toy kitchen.
