The death of a loved one is one of the most difficult challenges a family may ever have to face. Children grieve differently than adults, and depending on their age and developmental level, their interpretation of death is not always the same as an adult’s.
Lean On Me (LOM) is a structured, six-week bereavement support group for children and families who have experienced the loss of a loved one through death. It is designed to provide support, not therapy; children do best in a group if they can be with their peers. It allows the children the opportunity to meet others their age who have had a loss. Children must be 6 years of age to attend.
Grief is a family process and impacts the entire family system. The adult group meets simultaneously.
The support groups are facilitated by a child life specialist, social worker, and chaplain. The support group sessions are offered in the spring and fall and held at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. In addition, a one-day Lean On Me Camp is offered during the summer.
