Entornos para dormir no seguros causan más de 150 muertes de lactantes en Texas cada año. Muertes de lactantes y niños son prevenibles acatando las recomendaciones de cómo establecer un entorno seguro de sueño.Proteja a su hijo con estas prácticas de sueño seguro:
- Desde el primer día, los niños necesitan un espacio protegido para dormir. Una cuna con sabanas muy tirantes y con listones de la cuna separados por una distancia no más grande que una lata de soda (2-3/8 pulgadas).
- absténgase de colocar elementos adicionales en la cuna con un niño dormido como protectores, almohadas, animales de peluche y mantas sueltas.
- Mantenga la habitación del bebé fresca, alrededor de 70 grados Fahrenheit y tenga cuidado de no vestir al bebé demasiado calurosamente.
- El riesgo de asfixia para los bebés que duermen en una cama de adultos es mayor en un 40 por ciento. Absténgase de colocar al niño en la cama con un hermano mayor o un adulto. Otros entornos inseguros incluyen sillones, sofás y camas de agua.

"Antes de dar de alta del hospital, nuevos padres aprenden acerca de las prácticas de sueño seguro, junto con CPR y con la verificación de la seguridad del asiento de seguridad del carro," dice Janet Pointer, R.N., Coordinadora de trauma en el Hospital Pediátrico Driscoll. "Cuidadores y padres sin esta educación pueden no darse cuenta de que su comportamiento puede poner a sus bebés en riesgo. Las muertes relacionadas con el sueño en los recién nacidos son prevenibles cuando los bebés están en entornos de sueño seguro constantemente."
La educación sobre el sueño seguro de por sí sola puede reducir el número de muertes infantiles repentinos, inesperados en los Estados Unidos por hasta un 50 por ciento.
