Driscoll Children’s Hospital has been approved for accreditation as a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Affiliate Program.
By virtue of the accreditation, the hospital will have access to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s tools and resources. Among those resources are the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Clinical Practice Guidelines, which are implemented and accessible to the inpatient and outpatient staff.
“Cystic Fibrosis is one of those diseases that has a national standard of care,” said Driscoll Pulmonologist Jon Roberts, MD, who is the director of the program. “When a child is given that diagnosis, there is a protocol standard for how that patient is treated and followed up. We were previously treating these patients appropriately, and this only enhances our standard of care and also gives us credibility.”
It’s recommended that Cystic Fibrosis patients go to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-accredited care centers four times a year for multidiscipline clinic visits, including evaluations by the physician, respiratory therapist, nutritionist and social worker. By earning this accreditation, Driscoll Children’s Hospital makes it more convenient for those patients to make those visits. Driscoll is one of 110 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-accredited care centers nationwide.
“This fulfills a big need for our region of the state,” Dr. Roberts said. “It’s important for the Cystic Fibrosis patients from all parts of South Texas to have those regular evaluations, and our accreditation allows them to have those visits here at Driscoll. We’re really proud that this has added another benefit for our patients.”
