CORPUS CHRISTI – Proceeds from Fiesta de los Niños will go toward the purchase of the very latest high-tech equipment for the Radiology Department at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
Funds raised will support the purchase of a new state-of-the-art Dual Energy/Ultra-Fast CT (computed tomography) scanner. Driscoll’s current CT scanner provides 64 “slices,” or high-resolution X-ray images, from different angles.
Hospital officials say they chose the advanced technology of the CT scanner because it offers faster scan times, less radiation exposure to patients and sharper 3-D imaging.
“Anytime advancements in technology can provide us a higher quality result in a faster amount of time is ‘win-win’ for physicians and young patients. Less time on the exam table is always best for the child,” said Dr. Allister Arnold, MD, MMM, Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
“Our team of pediatric radiologists are thrilled to receive this most advanced CT scanner. We are all grateful to the South Texas community and the support of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Now every medical department will receive the best diagnostics ahead of any procedure,” he said.
“The new technology provides comprehensive cardiac exams with anatomic and functional information in just one heartbeat, even with challenging patients and higher heart rates. It will also be capable of imaging the entire aorta in most patients with minimal radiation exposure,” said Ernest Chavez, RT (R), MBA, Director of Radiology Services at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
“We are thrilled that this year’s Fiesta de los Ninos will support the purchase of state-of-the-art technology that extends the high quality of care given to each patient that comes to Driscoll Children’s Hospital. This truly keeps Driscoll on the leading edge in pediatric healthcare,” said Martha Avery, Vice President of Development at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
The 27th annual Fiesta de los Niños, Driscoll’s largest fundraiser of the year, will be held Friday, Feb. 8, 6:30-11 p.m., American Bank Center Exhibit Hall.
Led by longtime title sponsor Flint Hills Resources, Fiesta de los Niños is Driscoll’s largest annual fundraising event. Each year, 100 percent of the funds raised from the event directly benefit the hospital. In 2018, with more than 1,500 people in attendance, Fiesta grossed more than $940,000.
