Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgery has been an integral part of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiac program from the outset.  Beginning in the early 1950s – soon after Driscoll first opened its doors to serve children and families throughout South Texas – cardiothoracic surgery, which encompasses the heart, lungs, esophagus and vascular system, became a cornerstone of committed cardiac care at Driscoll for neonates, infants, children and teenagers.

Today The Driscoll Heart Center’s highly-skilled team of surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists and nurses continue to provide exceptional cardiac care combined with the highest level of diagnostic and surgical technologies for children of all ages in South Texas.    “When you consider that open heart surgery only began in the 1950s,” explains Dr. Stephen Langley, MD, FRCS (Cth), FETCS, Chief of Cardiac Surgery and Medical Director of The Driscoll Heart Center, “and now 70 years later, we are doing things never thought possible on the smallest of babies with the tiniest of hearts, it’s quite remarkable.  And we are doing it with amazing technologies, remarkably skilled teams, resulting in better outcomes and greater chances of survival.”

Cardiothoracic surgeries performed at The Driscoll Heart Center include minimally invasive “bloodless” surgery, ECMO, arrhythmia surgery and intraoperative stent techniques, a full-service heart catheterization lab, as well as a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU).

Performing more than 500 procedures annually, The Heart Center team’s expertise includes management of newborns with complex heart lesions involving single ventricle abnormalities, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, truncus arteriosus, interrupted aortic arch and transposition of the great arteries.
