Driscoll observes World Diabetes Day on the Lex

Drizzly rain and cold weather didn’t keep Driscoll Children’s Hospital staff, patients and families away from the hospital-sponsored World Diabetes Day event Nov. 14 on the USS Lexington.

The Lex was chosen as the site for the event so participants would have a good view of the Harbor Bridge, which was lit up in blue, the international color chosen by the International Diabetes Federation, to honor those with the disease.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006, and it is observed every year on Nov. 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1922.
