Drizzly rain and cold
weather didn’t keep Driscoll Children’s Hospital staff, patients and families
away from the hospital-sponsored World Diabetes Day event Nov. 14 on the USS
The Lex was chosen as
the site for the event so participants would have a good view of the Harbor Bridge,
which was lit up in blue, the international color chosen by the International
Diabetes Federation, to honor those with the disease.
World Diabetes Day was
created in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing
concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes
Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006, and it is observed every
year on Nov. 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered
insulin with Charles Best in 1922.
